Ryan provides many hours of volunteer time representing individual taxpayers with IRS and U.S. Tax Court disputes (often via Virtual Settlement Conferences) and is active with Ventura County Legal Aid’s legal aid clinic. His pro bono clients with IRS matters have included:
A taxpayer who had never filed an income tax return . . . ever (more common than you might think, though Ryan does not advise this approach)
A taxpayer under IRS audit regarding passive/active rental real estate involvement and the “qualified real estate professional” rules
A business owner facing “Substantial Underpayment” / Negligence IRS penalties
